What Does The Research Show?

Current research highlights that overcoming Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD) involves more than willpower alone. Studies point to three key areas of healing — self-awareness, emotional regulation, and relational connection — each addressing different roots of compulsive behaviour. These findings show that recovery is not just about stopping harmful patterns, but restoring balance in the mind, emotions, and relationships.

Self-Awareness

Research on mindfulness and sexual health shows that cultivating self-awareness helps individuals recognise triggers, reduce shame, and make intentional, values-based choices rather than acting on impulse. (Leavitt et al., 2019, Journal of Sex Research)

Emotional Regulation

Studies reveal that people with CSBD often struggle with emotional dysregulation, using sexual behaviour to cope with stress, anxiety, or negative emotions. Strengthening emotional regulation is therefore essential for long-term freedom. (Antons et al., 2023, Journal of Sexual Medicine)

Relational Connection

Attachment-based research shows that relational disconnection and insecure attachment styles can increase vulnerability to compulsive sexual behaviour. Building safe, supportive connections helps restore healthy intimacy and accountability. (Lewczuk et al., 2025, Frontiers in Psychology)
